The University of Edinburgh Sport Hall of Fame has welcomed 17 new inductees in recognition of their outstanding achievements in sport and their contribution to the University and wider sporting community.
The 2026 inductees represent a remarkable breadth of sporting achievement, from Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth success to European and World Championship medals, national titles and significant contributions to sport beyond competition.
Andy Burns
Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist
Three-Time European Cup Gold Medallist
Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2015 with an MSc in Strength & Conditioning.
Andy Burns has represented Scotland with distinction on the international judo stage, highlighted by winning a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the Men’s -90kg category at Glasgow 2014.
Andy has been a key competitor in Scottish judo, achieving success on the international stage. Alongside his Commonwealth success, Andy enjoyed a successful European career, securing three European Cup gold medals, and competing among the continent’s leading judoka.
His achievements reflect years of dedication, resilience and excellence, establishing him as one of Scotland’s most accomplished judo athletes.
Rosemary Crime (née Payne)
Double Commonwealth Medallist
Olympian in Munich 1972
Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1956 with an MA in Arts.
Rosemary was one of Scotland’s most accomplished field athletes, achieving Commonwealth and Olympic success in discus throwing.
She won gold at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and followed this with a silver medal at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, establishing herself as one of the leading athletes of her generation.
Rosemary also represented Great Britain at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, competing among the world’s best.
Her Commonwealth and Olympic achievements cement her place among Scotland’s most successful athletes.
David Cumberlidge

Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2022 with an MSc in Geoenergy.
David Cumberlidge has achieved success on both the international, university and senior global stage, representing England with distinction in swimming.
He made his Commonwealth Games debut at the Gold Coast 2018, winning silver medals in the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley Relay events, alongside a fourth-place finish in the 50m Freestyle final.
David continued his success by winning gold in the 50m Freestyle at the 2019 World University Games, cementing his status as one of the world’s leading university swimmers.
Euan Burton

Euan Burton has enjoyed a distinguished career in international judo, representing Scotland and Great Britain at the highest level and establishing himself as one of Scotland’s leading judoka.
Euan won a Commonwealth Games gold medal, alongside multiple bronze medals at the World and European Championships, reflecting his sustained success on the international stage. Euan has also made a significant contribution to the development of judo in Scotland, both through his achievements as an elite athlete and his wider influence within the sport. His career continues to inspire the next generation of judoka.
Archie Goodburn

Graduated in 2026 with an MEng in Chemical Engineering
Archie Goodburn is one of Scotland’s most accomplished breaststroke swimmers, achieving success at junior, European and senior international level while combining elite sport with academic excellence.
Representing Great Britain and Scotland, Archie has won medals at the European Championships, European Under-23 Championships and World Junior Championships, establishing himself among the world’s leading breaststroke swimmers. He became British Champion in 2023, has won multiple British Championship medals and holds the Scottish record in the 50m Breaststroke. Alongside his sporting achievements, Archie has excelled academically as a Chemical Engineering student at the University of Edinburgh.
Gemma Gibbons

Gemma graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2017 with a PGDE in Secondary Education.
Gemma Gibbons is one of Britain’s most accomplished judoka, achieving Olympic and Commonwealth success on the international stage.
Her defining career moment came at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where she won a silver medal in the Women’s -78kg judo category, becoming one of Great Britain’s most recognisable athletes.
She continued her success by securing silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, representing England with distinction.
Beyond competition, Gemma has continued to inspire through her commitment to sport, education and supporting the next generation of athletes.
Kathryn Greenslade
Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist
European Championships Gold & Bronze Medallist
Kat graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2023 with an MBChB in Medicine.
Kathryn “Kat” Greenslade achieved international success in swimming while balancing elite sport with studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
Representing Great Britain at the 2017 European Short Course Championships, she reached three individual finals. Kat also competed at the World University Games in 2017 and 2019, reaching multiple finals.
Representing Wales at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Kat contributed to a bronze medal-winning performance in the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay.
She also won European Championship gold in the Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay and was crowned British Champion in the 200m Freestyle in 2018.
Kara Hanlon

Graduated in 2020 with a BSc in Applied Sport Science and in 2024 with a MSc in Sport Policy, Management & International Development
Kara Hanlon has established herself as one of Scotland’s leading breaststroke swimmers, achieving international success while becoming a pioneering athlete from the Western Isles.
Representing Scotland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Kara reached the finals of the 50m and 100m Breaststroke, as well as the 4x100m Medley Relay. She went on to represent Great Britain at the European Championships, reaching finals and semi-finals, before contributing to a bronze medal-winning relay performance at the 2023 European Short Course Championships. A multiple British champion and Scottish record holder, Kara’s achievements reflect her dedication, resilience and excellence in the pool.
Megan Keith

Graduated in 2025 with a BSc in Sport Science and 2027 with a Masters in Public Health
Megan Keith has established herself among Europe’s leading distance runners, achieving Olympic, World and Commonwealth success during an outstanding career in endurance athletics.
A European Under-23 champion and record holder, Megan continued her rise by winning bronze in the 10,000m at the 2024 European Championships and representing Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In 2025, she achieved a top-10 finish at the World Championships and added further European Cross Country success. Representing Scotland at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Megan secured a bronze medal, further cementing her status as one of Britain’s leading distance athletes.
Patricia Littlechild

Patricia graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1989 with an MBChB.
Patricia Littlechild is one of Scotland’s most accomplished rifle shooters, achieving Commonwealth success and representing her country with distinction throughout her career.
At the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Patricia won a silver medal in the Women’s Prone Rifle Pairs event and a bronze medal in the individual Prone Rifle competition, highlighting her consistency at the highest level.
Across her career, she earned 39 international caps for Scotland, demonstrating exceptional longevity, precision and dedication within the sport while balancing the demands of a medical career.
Kieran McGuckin

Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2019 with an MEng in Mechanical Engineering and an MA from the Business School.
Kieran McGuckin has represented Scotland on the international swimming stage, achieving Commonwealth Games success and establishing himself as a key freestyle relay athlete.
At the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Kieran won a bronze medal in the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay, contributing to a standout performance alongside his Scottish teammates. He also competed in the individual 50m and 100m Freestyle events at the Games.
Domestically, Kieran secured a British Championships bronze medal in the 100m Freestyle in 2017, reflecting his consistency among the UK’s leading sprint swimmers.
Bill Murray

Bill graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1980 with an MA in Philosophy and English Literature.
William “Bill” Murray achieved Commonwealth Games success during an impressive rifle shooting career representing Scotland on the international stage.
His four-year competitive career was highlighted by winning bronze at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland and silver at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, both in the Men’s 3-Position Rifle event.
Following his own success as an athlete, Bill went on to make a significant contribution to international shooting as a coach, supporting Olympic and world-class athletes and helping develop the next generation of competitors. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence in the sport.
Dr Andrew Murray
International Leader in Sport & Exercise Medicine

Graduated from The University of Edinburgh with a PhD
Dr Andrew Murray has made an outstanding contribution to sport through his leadership and expertise in sport and exercise medicine, supporting athletes and teams at the highest level of international competition.
As Chief Medical Officer for Ryder Cup Europe and medical lead for the DP World Tour, he has played a key role across global sport, including Olympic and Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championships. Alongside his clinical work, Andrew is a respected academic with over 140 scientific publications and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. He has also achieved remarkable sporting feats as an international distance runner and ultra-endurance athlete.
George Sandor

Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1968 with an MBChB.
George Sandor enjoyed a distinguished fencing career, representing Scotland on the international stage and achieving Commonwealth Games success.
A University of Edinburgh athlete, George competed across foil and epee, earning multiple Scottish and British university titles before representing Scotland at two Commonwealth Games.
He won a bronze medal in the Team Foil event at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica and a silver medal in the Team Epee event at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. George also represented Great Britain at the 1965 World University Games in Budapest, highlighting his excellence in the sport.
Martin Sinclair
Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist
Double Gold Medallist at Commonwealth Championships
Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1988 with a BSc in Computer Science and Electronics.
Martin Sinclair represented Scotland at three Commonwealth Games, and Great Britain at World Cups and European Championships.
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Martin won a silver medal in the Men’s 50m Rifle Prone Pairs event, partnering Neil Stirton to secure Scotland’s first Commonwealth shooting medal in the discipline for many years.
Martin twice won Gold for Scotland at Commonwealth Shooting Championships in the three-position rifle match. He continues to compete at national level, and actively supports the University Rifle Club.
Winston Sweatman

Champion Judoka and Mathematician
Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1992 with a PhD in Mathematics.
Winston Sweatman was a leading figure in Scottish judo, achieving Commonwealth success while competing on the international stage.
Representing Scotland at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, Winston won a silver medal in the Men’s -86kg category, demonstrating his technical ability and competitiveness among the Commonwealth’s best judoka.
Alongside his Commonwealth achievement, Winston was a keen participant within the University of Edinburgh Judo Club, a team member and club captain.
Balancing elite sport with completing a PhD in Mathematics, he exemplified dedication, discipline and excellence both on and off the mat.
Jack Thorpe
Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist
Two-Time World University Games Finalist
Jack graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2019 with a BSc in Sport and Recreation Management and in 2023 with an MSc in Performance Psychology.
Jack Thorpe represented Scotland and Great Britain with distinction on the international swimming stage, earning Commonwealth honours and national championship titles.
In 2014, he became the first Scot to break the 22-second barrier in the 50m short-course freestyle, setting a new National Record. He added the 50m long-course freestyle record in 2018, holding both until his retirement in 2021.
In 2017, Jack represented GB at the World University Games before going on to claim Commonwealth bronze at Gold Coast 2018 in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay, having narrowly finished fourth at Glasgow 2014. He also reached the semi-finals of the 50m and 100m Freestyle.
Melanie Woods

Double Commonwealth Games Champion
Graduated 2016 with a BA (Hons) in Physical Education
Melanie Woods has achieved outstanding success in para-athletics, competing at the highest level of wheelchair racing and representing Scotland and Great Britain with distinction.
Melanie has competed at multiple Paralympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games in the T54 classification. Her career highlights include winning Bronze medals in the 800m and 1500m at the 2025 World Championships, alongside reaching finals at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Melanie achieved further success, winning two gold medals in the 400m and 1500m T54 events, cementing her place among the world’s leading wheelchair racers.

The 2026 inductees join an illustrious group of University of Edinburgh graduates, students, staff and sporting figures whose achievements have made a lasting contribution to sport.
This year's group demonstrates the many different ways in which University of Edinburgh people have contributed to sport — from competing on the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth stage, to achieving success at World and European Championships, representing Scotland and Great Britain, coaching future generations and making a lasting contribution through sport and exercise medicine.
There is also a strong University connection running throughout this year's inductees. Many balanced elite competition with demanding academic programmes, while others have continued to contribute to University sport long after their competitive careers ended.
From the pioneering achievements of Rosemary Crime in the 1970s through to the recent international success of athletes including Megan Keith, Archie Goodburn, Kathryn Greenslade and Melanie Woods, the 2026 inductees represent generations of sporting excellence.
Their achievements form an important part of the University's sporting history and provide inspiration for the next generation of Edinburgh athletes.
